Back pain after car accident.

Low back pain following a motor vehicle accident is frequently multifactorial involving lumbar joint irritation, disc provocation, sacroiliac disruption, and paraspinal muscle dysfunction simultaneously. At Motion Theory, we distinguish between these drivers through systematic clinical assessment and build a structured program that addresses each component.

Who It's For

Patients with lumbar or sacral pain, sciatica, or trunk stiffness following a motor vehicle accident. Applicable to all claim types including ICBC Enhanced Care and third-party liability claims.

What We Assess

We assess lumbar mobility, joint provocation, disc behavior, neural tension, and sacropelvic alignment. Trunk endurance and strength are measured objectively to guide load prescription.

Treatment Approach

Treatment targets the specific injury drivers identified at assessment. Manual therapy, graded loading, neural mobilization, and motor control training are combined into a progressive program anchored to weekly functional milestones.

Recovery Pathway

Phase 1

Acute Management

Pain reduction, restoration of lumbar mobility, and early activation of deep spinal stabilizers within comfortable range.

Phase 2

Load & Endurance

Progressive spinal loading, trunk strength development, neural desensitization, and activity tolerance building.

Phase 3

Return to Life

Full occupational, recreational, and social demand return with objective functional reassessment and ICBC claim documentation.

Common Questions

My back pain came on 2 days after the accident. Is this normal?

Yes. Post-MVA back pain frequently presents with a 24 to 72 hour delay as inflammation and muscle guarding develop after the initial adrenaline response subsides.

I was told to rest but the pain is not improving. What should I do?

Extended rest is one of the most counterproductive interventions for post-MVA back pain. Active, progressive rehabilitation consistently produces better outcomes. We can help establish a safe loading program even in the acute phase.

Can back pain after an accident cause permanent damage?

Most post-MVA back pain resolves fully with appropriate early rehabilitation. The risk of chronicity increases significantly if treatment is delayed or passive-only approaches are used.
