Nurse back pain physiotherapy.
Back pain in nursing is endemic, driven by repetitive patient handling, prolonged standing, awkward postures, and the cumulative strain of physically demanding shift work. At Motion Theory, we are located steps from Vancouver General Hospital and work with a high volume of nursing staff and healthcare workers. We understand your occupational demands and build programs that address the specific loading patterns of your role.
Who It's For
Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Care Aides, and other patient-facing healthcare staff experiencing work-related back pain. Applicable to acute strain presentations, chronic recurring pain, and post-surgical recovery.
What We Assess
We assess your lumbar and thoracic spine function, hip mobility, core endurance, and the specific movement patterns involved in patient transfers, charting postures, and floor work. Objective strength testing establishes your current capacity against the demands of your role.
Treatment Approach
Treatment targets the injury drivers specific to nursing including repetitive flexion loading, unilateral strain patterns, and insufficient hip and glute strength that forces load onto the lumbar spine. We combine manual therapy with a progressive strengthening program you can continue between shifts.
Recovery Pathway
Pain Reduction
Targeted manual therapy, anti-inflammatory load management strategies, and identification of the primary injury driver.
Strength & Mechanics
Hip and glute strengthening, lumbar stabilizer activation, and patient transfer mechanics coaching.
Shift Tolerance
Building the endurance to tolerate full shift demands, with progressive loading leading to sustained symptom resolution.
Clinic Location & Access
Located at 1367 West Broadway in Vancouver, Motion Theory is situated in the Fairview medical corridor, in close proximity to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). We serve patients from Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, and the broader Metro Vancouver area.
Common Questions
My back pain comes on during night shifts. Is that a work injury?
Back pain consistently provoked or worsened by occupational activities is generally considered work-related. You may be eligible for WorkSafeBC coverage or VGH employee health benefits.
Can I keep working while doing physiotherapy?
In most cases, yes. We work with your shift schedule and design a program that supports continued work rather than requiring time off, though sometimes modified duties for a short period improves outcomes.
Are you familiar with VGH staff benefits?
Yes. We work with many VGH, PHC, and PHSA staff. We can direct bill your health authority employee benefits and coordinate with occupational health if needed.
