Neck pain physiotherapy.
Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints, yet it is frequently undertreated with passive strategies that provide short-term relief without building the capacity needed for lasting resolution. At Motion Theory, we address the full cervical spine including joints, muscles, discs, and neural structures with a structured program that replaces temporary relief with durable strength.
Who It's For
Patients with acute or chronic neck pain, cervicogenic headaches, shoulder and arm referral, and stiffness from postural loading, occupational demands, or injury. Includes post-MVA neck presentations covered by ICBC and work-related cervical strain covered by WorkSafeBC.
What We Assess
We assess all cervical and upper thoracic segments, deep cervical flexor strength, neural tension, and headache provocation patterns. Objective range of motion and strength data establish your baseline and track your progress.
Treatment Approach
Treatment combines cervical and thoracic joint mobilization, deep cervical flexor strengthening, postural load management, and neural mobilization where indicated. The goal is to build a neck that can tolerate your life's demands, not just feel better on the treatment table.
Recovery Pathway
Mobility & Pain Reduction
Cervical and thoracic joint mobilization, postural correction, and gentle deep flexor activation to begin breaking the pain-spasm cycle.
Strength & Endurance
Progressive deep cervical flexor and upper trapezius strengthening, thoracic mobility, and screen posture endurance training.
Load Return
Full occupational and recreational load tolerance, sleep position optimization, and headache prevention strategies.
Clinic Location & Access
Located at 1367 West Broadway in Vancouver, Motion Theory is situated in the Fairview medical corridor, in close proximity to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). We serve patients from Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, and the broader Metro Vancouver area.
Common Questions
Can physiotherapy help cervicogenic headaches?
Yes. Cervicogenic headaches originating from the upper cervical joints respond very well to targeted physiotherapy including joint mobilization and deep cervical flexor training.
My neck always feels tight by end of day. Is that fixable?
End-of-day tension typically reflects insufficient postural endurance and deep cervical muscle weakness rather than a structural problem. This is very addressable with the right strengthening program.
Should I use a standing desk for neck pain?
Standing desks can help but are not a universal solution as many people simply exchange sitting posture problems for standing posture problems. We can advise on optimal workstation setup as part of your assessment.
