ICBC / MVA Rehabilitation

ICBC first 12 weeks guide.

The first 12 weeks after a motor vehicle accident are the most critical window for recovery. ICBC's Enhanced Care program pre-authorizes physiotherapy during this period but what matters most is what you do with that window. This guide outlines what to expect, what to prioritize, and how Motion Theory structures your rehabilitation to maximize your outcome.

Who It's For

Patients in the first 12 weeks following a BC motor vehicle accident who want to understand how to navigate ICBC Enhanced Care and make the most of their pre-authorized treatment window.

What We Assess

Week one assessment at Motion Theory establishes your injury profile, severity, and a projected recovery timeline. This early documentation is valuable both clinically and for your ICBC claim file.

Treatment Approach

The first 12 weeks follow a structured three-stage model: acute management, capacity rebuilding, and functional return. Each stage has objective criteria that drive progression, ensuring your treatment evolves with your recovery rather than staying reactive to symptoms.

Recovery Pathway

Weeks 1-4

Acute Management

Pain reduction, mobility restoration, injury documentation, and establishing your baseline. This is the most important window to start active care.

Weeks 4-8

Active Recovery

Progressive strengthening, postural retraining, and building daily activity tolerance. Pain should be declining; function should be improving.

Weeks 8-12

Functional Return

Work, sport, and recreational demands reintegrated. Treatment plan extension documentation prepared if clinically required beyond 12 weeks.

Common Questions

What happens if I do not start physio in the first 12 weeks?

The risk of developing chronic pain and functional disability increases substantially when active rehabilitation is delayed. The first 12 weeks represent the most biologically receptive recovery window.

Can I change physiotherapy clinics during my claim?

Yes. You can transfer your care to Motion Theory at any point during your claim. We request any relevant previous documentation and continue your care from your current point of recovery.

What documentation should I keep during my first 12 weeks?

Keep a record of your symptoms, functional limitations, missed work, and any additional medical appointments. This documentation supports your ICBC claim file if your recovery extends beyond the initial period.
