Concussion Rehabilitation

Concussion Rehab in Vancouver.

Co-located with Advance Concussion Clinic at 1367 West Broadway. We pick up where acute concussion care ends, taking you through vestibular, oculomotor, cervical, and TMJ rehab, then return to sport and full performance. The continuum no other Vancouver clinic can offer.

Concussion recovery is not rest in a dark room. Current consensus guidelines support brief relative rest followed by sub-threshold aerobic exercise and graded return to activity. Prolonged rest prolongs symptoms.

Most concussions resolve in 2 to 4 weeks. When symptoms persist beyond a month, post-concussion syndrome usually reflects treatable subsystems, vestibular, cervical, oculomotor, or exertional, that respond to targeted physiotherapy. Identifying which subsystems are contributing is half the work.

The Continuum

From acute care to full return, in one building.

Advance Concussion Clinic occupies Suite 110 at 1367 West Broadway. They handle initial concussion assessment, medical management, and acute care. Motion Theory carries patients through the rehab arc that follows.

No other Vancouver physiotherapy clinic is positioned this way. For patients, it means coordinated handoffs, no repeating your history, and a single rehab address from initial concussion through return to sport.

Who this is for

Adults and youth athletes with:

  • Acute concussion from sport, motor vehicle accident, workplace injury, or fall

  • Post-concussion syndrome with symptoms persisting beyond 4 weeks

  • Persistent dizziness, headache, brain fog, or balance dysfunction following head injury

  • Athletes preparing for return-to-sport clearance after concussion

  • ICBC and WorkSafeBC concussion claims

Multi-system assessment

We identify every system contributing to your symptoms, then treat each one individually. Standard assessment includes:

Dynavision

Neurocognitive testing

Visual-motor reaction time, peripheral awareness, decision-making under cognitive load. Objective baseline and reassessment data.

SCAT6

Symptom and cognitive screening

Validated concussion assessment tool used at every elite sport level. Symptom severity, cognitive function, balance, neurological screen.

Vestibular & Oculomotor

Inner ear and visual tracking

VOMS-style examination. Identifies whether dizziness, motion sensitivity, or visual disturbance is inner ear, central, or oculomotor in origin.

Cervical Spine

Neck involvement

Around 80 percent of concussion patients have cervical dysfunction driving headache or cognitive symptoms. Manual assessment, deep cervical flexor testing, segmental examination.

Exertion Tolerance

Sub-threshold heart-rate testing

Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test or equivalent. Establishes your symptom-onset threshold and the safe heart-rate ceiling for early aerobic rehab.

TMJ Screen

Jaw and face involvement

Around 30 percent of concussion patients show TMJ symptoms. Screened at intake. Treated jointly with our chiropractor when indicated.

A staged plan, each system treated individually

Phase 1

Multi-system assessment

Identify all contributing systems and establish your individual symptom thresholds.

Phase 2

Targeted treatment

Vestibular rehab, cervical therapy, oculomotor training, sub-threshold exertion, and cognitive loading. Each system progressed independently.

Phase 3

Return to Learn, Work, Sport

Graded return protocol with symptom monitoring, Dynavision reassessment, and full clearance criteria met before return.

60-minute initial assessment. Care plan with session count and cadence after the first visit. We discharge you when you are back to learning, working, and competing at your pre-injury level, not when symptoms quiet down.

Book a concussion assessment

Acute concussion, persistent post-concussion symptoms, or return-to-sport clearance, we can help. Same-week appointments typically available. ICBC direct billing for accident-related cases.

Common Questions

How long does concussion recovery take?

Most concussions resolve in 2 to 4 weeks. Symptoms persisting beyond a month are post-concussion syndrome, which responds well to structured multi-system rehab.

Should I rest completely?

Brief relative rest for 24 to 48 hours, then sub-threshold activity progression. Prolonged complete rest is not supported by current evidence.

Do you treat post-concussion syndrome?

Yes. This is what multi-system assessment is built for. We identify which subsystems are driving persistent symptoms and treat each one individually.

Can I see you for a concussion without an insurance claim?

Yes. We see concussion patients under extended health, WorkSafeBC, ICBC, and self-pay.

Will I be cleared to return to sport?

Clearance follows a stepwise protocol with Dynavision reassessment, exertion tolerance testing, and sport-specific demand testing. Calendar time alone does not determine readiness.

What does the ACC co-location mean for my care?

Same building, coordinated handoffs. ACC handles acute concussion assessment and medical management. Motion Theory handles the rehab arc through to return to activity.
