Return to sport physiotherapy.
Return to sport is not a calendar milestone. It is a functional achievement. Pain-free movement is the baseline requirement, not the clearance criteria. At Motion Theory, return-to-sport decisions are guided by objective testing: limb symmetry, hop capacity, reactive agility, and psychological readiness assessed together before any clearance is given.
Who It's For
Athletes at any level, recreational, amateur, or competitive, who are recovering from injury or surgery and need objective criteria to guide their return. Applicable to all sports and activity types.
What We Assess
Return-to-sport assessment at Motion Theory includes single-leg hop testing, isokinetic strength symmetry estimation, reactive agility testing, and patient-reported outcome measures. Results are compared against sport-specific benchmarks to determine readiness.
Treatment Approach
If readiness criteria are not met, we build a targeted strength and conditioning program to close the specific deficits identified. If criteria are met, we provide sport-specific conditioning and a graduated return-to-training plan.
Recovery Pathway
Objective Testing
Hop testing, strength assessment, agility evaluation, and psychological readiness screening.
Deficit Closing
Targeted strength and power development to achieve sport-specific clearance criteria.
Graduated Return
Structured return-to-training plan from non-contact practice to full competitive exposure.
Clinic Location & Access
Located at 1367 West Broadway in Vancouver, Motion Theory is situated in the Fairview medical corridor, in close proximity to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). We serve patients from Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, and the broader Metro Vancouver area.
Common Questions
My doctor said I am clear to play but I still do not feel confident. What now?
Medical clearance and functional readiness are different things. Psychological readiness, meaning confidence in the injured limb, is an independent predictor of re-injury. We assess both and address the specific gaps.
What is the hop test and why does it matter?
Single-leg hop tests measure reactive lower limb power symmetry between legs. A limb symmetry index below 90 percent is associated with a significantly increased re-injury risk on return to sport.
Can I return to sport after an ACL reconstruction in 6 months?
The evidence suggests returning before 9 months with insufficient quad strength increases re-injury risk by 4 to 6 times. Criterion-based clearance, not calendar clearance, is the standard of care.
