Neck pain after car accident.
Neck pain after a car accident is one of the most common MVA injury presentations and one of the most mismanaged. Passive rest and pain medication alone consistently produce worse long-term outcomes than early, active physiotherapy. At Motion Theory, we treat the full cervical and upper thoracic complex, addressing the muscle, joint, disc, and neurological components that contribute to your pain.
Who It's For
Patients experiencing neck pain, stiffness, headaches, or arm symptoms following a motor vehicle accident. Includes acute whiplash presentations and delayed-onset cervical pain, as well as post-accident cervicogenic headache.
What We Assess
We assess all cervical segments, facet joint behaviour, disc provocation, upper limb neural tension, and cranial nerve screening. Strength and range of motion are measured objectively as baseline documentation for your ICBC claim.
Treatment Approach
Treatment addresses joint mobility, deep cervical flexor strength, postural load management, and neural sensitivity where present. Progressive return to all head and neck demands is guided by weekly objective reassessment.
Recovery Pathway
Pain & Mobility
Manual therapy to restore joint mobility, postural education, and gentle deep cervical muscle activation to reduce pain cycling.
Strength & Stability
Progressive deep cervical flexor and extensor strengthening, upper thoracic mobility, and shoulder-neck integration.
Load & Return
Screen exposure, sustained posture tolerance, sleep position optimization, and return to full occupational and social demands.
Clinic Location & Access
Located at 1367 West Broadway in Vancouver, Motion Theory is situated in the Fairview medical corridor, in close proximity to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). We serve patients from Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, and the broader Metro Vancouver area.
Common Questions
Why does my neck hurt more a few days after the accident?
Inflammatory processes and muscle guarding typically peak at 48 to 72 hours post-injury. This is a normal healing response, not a sign that your injury is worsening.
Will I need imaging such as X-ray or MRI?
Most uncomplicated whiplash and neck pain presentations do not require imaging in the first 4 to 6 weeks. Your physiotherapist will screen for red flags and coordinate imaging referral if clinically indicated.
Is neck pain after a car accident covered by ICBC?
Yes. Post-MVA neck pain is directly covered under ICBC's Enhanced Care. No deductible applies to physiotherapy in the first 12 weeks.
