Chiropractic at Motion Theory is clinical, evidence-informed, and integrated with the broader rehabilitation team. Care is delivered by Dr. Patrick Payne, DC, a UBC kinesiology graduate and Macquarie University trained chiropractor with a background in sports rehabilitation and on-field sports medicine. Who It's For

Active adults and athletes with neck and back pain, sports injuries, shoulder, hip, knee and extremity presentations, tendinopathy and overuse injuries, cervicogenic headaches, and rib or sacroiliac joint pain. Patients recovering from a motor vehicle accident under an ICBC claim. Weekend athletes and competitive athletes working back to sport. Applicable to ICBC, WorkSafeBC, extended health, and self-pay patients.

What We Assess

Chiropractic assessment includes segmental spinal examination, joint mobility testing, muscle function screening, neurological testing where indicated, and movement analysis informed by Dr. Payne's kinesiology background. The goal is to identify the specific joints, tissues, and movement limitations driving your symptoms rather than treating the spine globally. For jaw and TMJ presentations, cervical spine evaluation is integrated with our physiotherapy team through the TMJ + Cervical Recovery program.

Treatment Approach

Treatment is technique-matched to your assessment findings and preferences. Chiropractic adjustment and joint mobilization when indicated, soft tissue therapy, and targeted progressive exercise are combined so that symptomatic relief converts into restored function, strength, and confidence. Where manipulation is not indicated or not preferred, mobilization and soft tissue approaches are used instead. Findings and treatment direction are shared with your physiotherapy team when care is coordinated across disciplines.

Common Questions

Who delivers chiropractic care at Motion Theory?

Dr. Patrick Payne, DC. Patrick completed his Bachelor of Kinesiology at UBC and his chiropractic degree at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, followed by three and a half years in private practice treating active adults and athletes. He is registered with the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC).

Is chiropractic adjustment safe?

Spinal manipulation performed by a registered chiropractor is generally very safe. We take a full health history and screen for contraindications before any manipulation is applied. Where manipulation is contraindicated or not preferred, mobilization or soft tissue techniques are used instead.

How is chiropractic different from physiotherapy?

Both professions treat musculoskeletal conditions, but with different primary toolkits. Chiropractors emphasize spinal and joint manipulation and neurological function. Physiotherapists emphasize movement analysis and progressive loading. At Motion Theory, your care can be coordinated across both disciplines under one roof.

Does ICBC cover chiropractic treatment after a car accident?

Yes. Chiropractic is one of the treatments pre-authorized under ICBC Enhanced Care in the initial recovery period after a crash, with no doctor's referral required. We bill ICBC directly, so approved visits have no out-of-pocket cost.

Is chiropractic covered by extended health?

Most BC extended health plans include chiropractic coverage. We direct bill to most major providers with $0 upfront where your plan allows. Check your specific plan for coverage limits.

Do you treat jaw pain and TMJ?

Yes. Jaw symptoms are frequently driven by the neck. Our TMJ + Cervical Recovery program addresses the cervical spine, posture, and jaw together, delivered jointly by chiropractic and physiotherapy.
