Hip replacement rehab.
Hip replacement rehabilitation requires careful progression through weight-bearing, range of motion, and strength within strict precautions defined by your surgeon and the approach used. Motion Theory provides structured, protocol-adherent rehabilitation designed to restore full hip function and get you back to your life with confidence.
Who It's For
Patients recovering from total hip arthroplasty (THA) whether anterior, posterior, or lateral surgical approach including those with partial or resurfacing procedures. We see patients at every stage, from early post-operative mobilization to those stalling at six months post-surgery.
What We Assess
We review your surgical approach to establish the correct precaution set, then assess your current range of motion, hip abductor and extensor strength, gait pattern, and pain behaviour. Objective limb symmetry testing guides our load prescription at every phase.
Treatment Approach
Early rehabilitation focuses on precaution education, walking aid progression, and safe muscle activation within protected ranges. Mid-phase work introduces progressive hip strengthening, single-leg stability, and stair mechanics. Final phases return you to community ambulation, work demands, and recreational activities with symmetry criteria met before discharge.
Recovery Pathway
Precautions & Early Loading
Weight-bearing progression per surgical protocol, safe range activation, gait aid weaning, and swelling management.
Strength & Stability
Hip abductor and extensor loading, closed-chain strength, stair mechanics, and normalization of walking pattern.
Return to Full Function
Symmetry testing, return to occupational demands, recreational activities, and driving clearance support.
Clinic Location & Access
Located at 1367 West Broadway in Vancouver, Motion Theory is situated in the Fairview medical corridor, in close proximity to Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). We serve patients from Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, and the broader Metro Vancouver area.
Common Questions
What hip precautions apply after surgery?
Precautions depend on the surgical approach. Posterior approach typically requires avoiding hip flexion past 90 degrees and internal rotation. Anterior approach usually has fewer restrictions. We work directly from your surgeon's protocol.
When can I drive after hip replacement?
Most patients return to driving between 4 to 8 weeks post-surgery, depending on which leg was operated on and when your surgeon clears it. We can help coordinate this clearance.
Is physiotherapy covered after hip surgery?
Most extended health plans cover post-surgical physiotherapy. If your surgery followed an accident, ICBC or WorkSafeBC coverage may also apply. We offer direct billing for all major providers.
